On December 1, 2017 European Investment Bank and Yerevan Municipality signed a financial agreement on implementation of energy efficiency measures.
In the frames of the agreement it is envisaged to increase the energy efficiency of public buildings, particularly - kindergartens. The use of renewable /solar/ energy is also envisaged.
“Yerevan Energy Efficiency Program” will see a loan of 7 mln euros from the EIB, 5 mln grant form E5P and a 1 mln grant from UNDP implemented and Green Climate Fund financed project.
“The cooperation between UNDP and Yerevan Municipality in energy efficiency originates from 2013, when for the first time in Armenia was performed a complete energy efficient rehabilitation of the multi-family building in Avan district of Yerevan.
The cooperation went on to the next step – “Green Urban Lighting” UNDP-GEF project, in the frames of which modern energy efficient lightning systems were installed in several central streets of Yerevan.
In early 2017 a new format of cooperation has been adopted: 2 public buildings are being renovated to become more energy efficient: in Kanaker-Zeytun and Erebuni districts of Yerevan.
The new loan agreement and the grants directed to GHG emissions reduction are a proof that energy efficient approaches are going to be continuous. This is just the first phase, which will be implemented mostly in public buildings, however we are firm that with joint efforts we are going to have serious success in residential buildings as well”,- commenting on the event mentioned Ms. Diana Harutyunyan, UNDP Climate Change Projects Programm Coordinator.
