The official opening ceremony of passive solar greenhouse constructed in Torosgyugh village (Sarapat community) of Shirak region took place on March 6, 2017. The passive solar greenhouse was constructed in the framework of the “Climate Risk Mitigation: Passive Solar Greenhouse” UNDP Project, with the financial assistance of the Romanian Government.
The representatives of UNDP Armenia, the Embassy of Romania, Bio Heating Solutions NGO, as well as Sarapat community participated in the event. In his welcoming speech president of "Toros" Consumer Cooperative, Misha Hakobyan, expressed his gratefulness to the donors for the project and highlighted the importance of implementing climate change adaptation and income generation projects in rural communities. Opening remarks were delivered by Dmitry Mariyasin, UNDP Deputy Resident Representative and Cezar Bivolaru, First Secretary, Embassy of Romania in Armenia.
The passive greenhouse will provide an alternative source of income to vulnerable farmers from climate change perspective. The climate risks, in combination with existing social and economic issues of Shirak marz, can have extremely negative impact on rural population that mainly relies on agricultural outputs. Thus passive solar greenhouse technology has been selected in order to demonstrate the potential for diversifying the income of farmers and providing the alternative income opportunity. In addition, this technology has unique design, which ensures high level of thermal insulation and accumulation of energy provided by the sun, thus enabling year-round agricultural production without additional heating costs.
