On 19 August 2026, the European Union, UNDP and United Nations partners, in partnership with the Government of Armenia, officially launched the Joint Programme “Clean Air for Health and Green Growth in Armenia” (EU4Clean Air in Armenia). The three-year initiative aims to strengthen Armenia’s capacity to monitor, assess and regulate air quality, contributing to healthier communities and sustainable green growth.

The inaugural event brought together representatives of the Government of Armenia, the EU, the UN system and international experts to discuss Armenia’s air quality challenges and priorities.

Konstantin Sokulskiy, UNDP Resident Representative a.i., highlighted that the Programme will build on Armenia’s progress in strengthening air quality legislation and institutions while addressing remaining gaps. Through strong national ownership and the combined expertise of UN partners, it will strengthen air quality governance, modernize monitoring systems, improve the generation and public accessibility of air quality information, and support Armenia’s commitments under the EU-Armenia Comprehensive and Enhanced Partnership Agreement (CEPA).

Vaclav Sterba, Deputy Head of Cooperation at the EU Delegation to Armenia, described the launch as an important milestone in joint efforts to address air quality challenges in a comprehensive, evidence-based and forward-looking manner, reaffirming the strong partnership between the EU, the Government of Armenia and implementing partners.

Over the next three years, the Programme will modernize and expand the national air quality monitoring network, strengthen the legal and regulatory framework in line with European standards, build institutional and technical capacities, and improve public access to reliable air quality information through digital tools, including an air quality portal and mobile application.
