On April 20 training workshop on “Adaptation monitoring and evaluation in Armenia” took place in the frame of UNDP-GEF Building Armenia’s National Transparency Framework under Paris Agreement (CBIT) project.

The workshop aimed at presenting to the stakeholders the necessity, applicability, international experience of the climate change adaptation monitoring and evaluation system, as well as, through active group work and discussions, building the capacity for the operation of the monitoring and evaluation system, data management and specification of short-term, medium-term and long-term indicators of sectoral adaptation, their monitoring and the ability to operationalize the procedures required for assessment.

The training was conducted by Gauss International, a contractor of the CBIT project, and was intended for the Interagency Coordinating Council on the Implementation of the Requirements and Provisions of the UNFCCC and the Paris Agreement, members of its working groups, other state agencies, as well as the scientific and expert community.

During the event, UNDP Climate Change Program Coordinator Diana Harutyunyan delivered welcoming remarks, emphasizing the importance of the climate change adaptation monitoring and evaluation system in the process of assessing the progress and effectiveness of measures included in the framework of sectoral and regional adaptation programs, and in the process of long-term adaptation policy planning.

Establishing a viable mechanism for monitoring and evaluation of adaptation is an important component of the national adaptation planning process. According to RA Government Decision No. 749, national, sectoral and regional adaptation programs are developed at 5-year intervals. In this context, as well as considering the complexity of predicting the effects of climate change, it is particularly important to monitor implemented adaptation measures and evaluate their effectiveness according to established sectoral indicators and standard operating procedures.

Over 50 representatives of Ministries of Environment; Economy; Territorial Administration and Infrastructure; Emergency Situations; Labour and Social Affairs; Health and High-tech Industry; Cadastre Committee; Statistics Committee; Urban Development Committee; "Hydrometeorology and Monitoring Center" SNOC; Environmental Program Implementation Office; "Gauss" international consulting company, UNDP and scientific attended the event and participated online

The work on the development of the climate change adaptation monitoring and assessment system, including indicators for the agriculture and water resources sectors, was launched in 2022 within the framework of the UNDP-GCF Armenia’s National Adaptation Plan project.
