With the support of a UNDP project, funded by the UK Government, implemented in cooperation with the Ministry of Environment of Armenia and “Armhydromet” SNCO, the institution has been equipped with a modern mobile laboratory for atmospheric air quality monitoring.

On March 23, the official handover ceremony of the mobile laboratory’s vehicle took place.

Welcoming remarks were delivered by Natia Natsvlishvili, UNDP Resident Representative in Armenia, Paul Morris, Chargé d'Affaires at the British Embassy in Yerevan, and Levon Azizyan, Director of “Armhydromet” SNCO. RA Deputy Minister of Environment Vahe Davtyan was also in attendance.

In her remarks, Natia Natsvlishvili emphasized the importance of ongoing efforts to modernize and strengthen the air quality monitoring system. She highlighted that more comprehensive and reliable data will enhance evidence-based policymaking, improve environmental management, and support the development of effective early warning systems.

Addressing the participants, Paul Morris underlined the importance of reliable and continuous air quality data for informed decision-making and effective policy development. Emphasizing the link between clean air, healthy ecosystems, and overall wellbeing, he noted that the initiative contributes to strengthening Armenia’s air quality monitoring system and reflects a shared commitment to environmental governance and public health,

Since 2020, based on the air quality monitoring development concept prepared with UNDP support, two modern automatic monitoring stations have already been installed with funding from the RA Government, with an additional station planned for 2026. The new mobile laboratory will complement the existing stationary network, significantly expanding “Armhydromet”’s capacity for air quality data collection and analysis. It will enable on-site measurements, facilitate the identification of pollution hotspots, and support a deeper understanding of emission sources.

The project also included a capacity development component. On 19 March, 18 specialists from “Armhydromet” SNCO participated in technical training to ensure the effective operation of the new mobile laboratory.
