Climate and related natural hazards and risks atlas for Shirak and Lori regions developed in the frame of UNDP-GCF NAP Project

“Presentation and discussion of Climate and related natural hazards and risks atlas” workshop took place on August 15. The event was organized in the frame of UNDP-GCF Armenia’s National Adaptation Plan (NAP) project; works were completed by Project subcontractor “GEORISK” scientific research company.


The workshop aimed at presenting and discussing “Climate related natural hazards and risks atlas” developed for Shirak and Lori regions, as well as GeoNode online system for collection, management and free distribution of geospatial data. “GEORISK” company, under the support of UNDP-GCF NAP Project, expressed readiness to conduct a training for the staff of the entity designated by the Ministry of Environment on the principles of managing GeoNode online system, as well as on the maintenance, amendment, updating and provision of access to the created maps.


Deputy Minister of Environment Gayane Gabrielyan and UNDP Deputy Resident Representative in Armenia Konstantin Sokulskiy delivered opening remarks during the event.


In her welcome speech Deputy Minister of Environment Gayane Gabrielyan emphasized the importance of having reliable information on climate change risks and the need for cooperation between various state structures, international organizations and scientific institutions. 


UNDP Deputy Resident Representative in Armenia Konstantin Sokulskiy stressed the importance of the development of provincial as well as climate related natural hazards and risks atlases and expressed confidence that the developed maps will serve policy makers in designing programs and implementing initiatives aimed at increasing the climate resilience of communities.


Over 50 representatives of the RA Ministries of Environment; Education, Science, Culture and Sports; Territorial Administration and Infrastructure; Economy, High Technologies and Industry; "Hydrometeorology and Monitoring Center" SNCO; RA Urban Development Committee; Statistical Committee; Cadastre Committee; Shirak and Lori Regional Administrations, as well as experts of UNDP and scientific and educational institutions attended the event and participated online.
