Alt

Today, the Government of Armenia approved the GHG Long-term Low Greenhouse Gas Emissions Development Strategy of the Republic of Armenia (until 2050). The strategy was developed by the Ministry of Environment with the support of "EU4Climate" EU-UNDP regional project.

The strategy has a key role in the implementation of the country's climate commitments under Paris Agreement. With the adoption of the document, Armenia joins the group of about 7 dozen countries that have already announced the goal of achieving climate neutrality in the long-term perspective. With the Strategy, the Government reaffirms its ambition to reduce greenhouse gas emissions to 2.07 t CO2 equivalent per capita by 2050.

By adopting the Strategy, the Government pursues the following goals:

-         ensuring a long-term agenda for the realization of climate commitments,

-         providing early and predictable signals for investors and economy sectors in planning long-term activities,

-         harmonization of development goals with climate actions and systematic consideration of possibilities through the entire economy

-         development of economic policy in line with technological progression, transforming the challenges into possibilities.

The Strategy covers 5 main sectors for greenhouse gas emission reduction (energy, agriculture, industrial processes, forestry and other land use, and waste), presenting the main policy directions and program initiatives according to scenarios. They are aimed at ensuring technological progression and sustainable development across sectors, at the same time realizing the great potential of reducing greenhouse gas emissions in the sectors.

The three scenarios will have a critical role on the pathway to achieve this vision, in terms of expecting appropriate results for the invested efforts and making adjustments in policies as necessary.
