Paris agreement and Doha amendment ratified

On February 9, 2017, the RA National Assembly ratified the Paris Agreement of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change, which will enter into force on April 22, 2017.   The Agreement, signed on December 12, 2015 and adopted at the 21st Conference of Parties to the Convention, has legal force and imposes climate change restrain measures on all the states worldwide.


The Agreement that came into effect on November 4, 2016, and 125 countries ratified it as of December 7, 2016. According to the Agreement, developing countries commence their activities for reducing greenhouse gases emissions reduction and limitation in year 2020. With mutual concent of all the countries it was decided to restrain the rise in the average temperature of global atmosphere to the maximum of 2 degrees above the pre-industrial levels (year 1850), while at the same time trying to not exceed 1.5 degrees (more details).


On February 9, 2017, Doha Amendment to Kyoto Protocol was also ratified. It was signed on December 8, 2012. This document allows to continue implementation of projects in the frames of Clean Dvelopment Mechanisms, as well as use financing of Adaptation Fund established in teh fraems of Kyoto protocol (more details). 


“I am happy to see that today the Armenian National Assembly by a majority vote ratified the Paris Agreement. The ratification shows the willingness of Armenia to fulfill obligation on implementation of the document’s provisions on the fight against climate change,” the French Ambassador to Armenia said in a statement.
