On April 12, a public hearing on the revision of the Ararat Basin Management Plan was held in Artashat. The works were carried out by Geoinfo LLC in the frame of UNDP-GCF Armenia’s National Adaptation Plan Project (NAP) within Consulting Services for the Revision of Basin Management Plans for the Southern and Ararat Basins of the Republic of Armenia.
The workshop aimed at introducing the revised and added sections of the Ararat basin management plan to the stakeholders of the Ararat Basin management area, as well as to discussing the results of the works done and the existing problems.
Head of the Ararat Basin Management Regional Department of the RA Ministry of Environment Khachik Harutyunyan and UNDP in Armenia Climate, Environment, Resilience team leader Hovhannes Ghazaryan delivered opening remarks.
“The need to revise the Ararat Basin Management Plan arose due to the expiration of the previous plan developed for the period 2016-2021. At the initiative of the Ministry of Environment, a new Ararat Basin Management Plan for the period of 2022-2027 has been developed with UNDP funding. As a result amounts of usable water resources and water resources of national-strategic importance have been revised, while forecasts of water supply and demand were updated, "said Khachik Harutyunyan.
In his speech, Hovhannes Ghazaryan stressed the importance of additional measures and actions aimed at ensuring availability of water resources, especially in the context of climate change.
“The development of basin management plans is a mandatory requirement of the RA Water Code, which aims to improve the efficiency of water resources management and water use, accounting as well for the expected impacts of climate change. As an effective planning tool, basin management plans set environmental goals as well as prioritize actions to achieve them. This is necessary for the efficient, sustainable use of water resources, as well as for balancing of water users, including agriculture, fish farming, industry, energy, etc.," concluded Hovhannes Ghazaryan.
The data included in the revised and added chapters and sections of the Ararat Basin Management Plan will assist entities responsible for water resources management, administrative bodies and the public in general in making decisions in the field of water resources contributing to their rational and efficient use.
Over 40 stakeholders attended the event and participated online, including representatives of the Ministry of Environment, Ararat Regional Administration, “Hydrometeorological Monitoring Center” SNCO, “Khosrov Forest State Reserve” SNCO, and UNDP.
Earlier, on March 10, in the frame of UNDP-GCF Armenia’s National Adaptation Plan project, a public hearing on the revised South Basin Management Plan took place, during which the stakeholders of the South Basin Management Area were presented with the revised and added sections of the Southern Basin Management Plan and the results of conducted works.
