On 6-7 May, the final workshop of “Mainstreaming Sustainable Land and Forest Management in Mountain Landscapes of North-Eastern Armenia” project took place. The project was funded by Global Environment Fund and implemented by UNDP for the period of 2016-2020, with a total budget of USD 3,157,169. The workshop gathered together representatives from RA ministries, state bodies, UNDP Armenia and other UN Armenia local agencies, as well as NGOs and companies working in forest management.
In her welcoming speech, the Deputy Minister of Environment, Mrs. Anna Mazmanyan underlined the importance of the project and expressed her gratitude for UNDP’s continuous efficient cooperation and support. UNDP Climate, Environment and Resilience Portfolio Programme Analyst, Mr. Hovhannes Ghazaryan briefed on the scope of the project, the set targets and implementation process.
Afterwards, Georgi Arzumanyan, UNDP Armenia/RBEC Environment and Green Economy Specialist gave a brief presentation about the objectives of the project, implementation framework and possible collaboration actions in future.
The project Technical Task Leader Mr. Hovik Sayadyan presented the key results, achievements of the project and sustainability policy prerequisites of land use and forest management.
The presentations delivered by project experts and stakeholders - MoE Forest Committee, “Biosophia” NGO, “Association of Tavoush Farmers”, “Hydrometeorology and Monitoring Center” SNCO, National Bureau of Expertise of the RA National Academy of Science focused on the results of forest regeneration activities and further steps, biofuel market advancement and perspectives in Armenia, actions towards alternative livelihood development in Tavush Marz, action results towards improving the monitoring of illegal deforestation, dendrochronology as an efficient tool for forest management in Armenia.
Hovik Sayadyan and UNDP Climate Change Programme Coordinator Diana Harutyunyan emphasized the work done under the project for the carbon stock inventory and national coefficients for the purpose of improving the land use component accountability as part of greenhouses gases national inventory.
The discussion between the participants followed, exchanging approaches and suggestions for the need of continuous efforts towards sustainable and use and forest management.
The workshop wrapped up with screening of several short videos on project implementation, the work done and results achieved.
